Bristol Zoo is great for kids
Lots of stuff in Bristol can be quite old, from the Elizabethan City Gates to the smugglers' caves beneath the centre's streets. It's not surprising, then, that Bristol Zoological Gardens (to use the proper name) is in fact the most well-known provincial zoo in the country. A major interest since Victorian times, Bristol Zoo has been sketching visitors from across the country for nearly 170 years. Located in Clifton and wedged in between prosperous residential streets, what the Zoo lacks in room and size, it more than makes up for in attractions and pets. There might not be any elephants or giraffes, but there are over 400 species of animals residing here, from the tiny (and horrifyingly large) insects of Bug Planet and the Butterfly Natrual enviroment to the majestic Asiatic lions and Western Lowland gorillas - with the latter housed in an progressive 180-degree (toughened! ) glass enclosure, Gorilla Island, that lets them stomp around above your head. Some other highlights are the tipp infested 'town house' in the Twilight World area, the Meerkat Lookout that gets you eye stage with everyone's favourite insurance policy flogging quadruped, and the hugely popular Seal & Penguin Coasts. Due to its compact size, you should manage to experience everything the Zoo has to offer in an afternoon, although those with children in tow might find an entire day swallowed up by the numerous play areas and Zooropia adventure playground. Admission isn't cheap at? 15. 95 for older people and? 9. 95 for kids, but the pets genuinely look happy
